I was very interested to see Microsoft was launching Bing their new search engine this week. Although I’m a very big fan of Google, I’m also a big fan of competition. Bing has a slick new home page that somewhat mirrors the simple look of Google, Yahoo and Ask. For me the look of the home page is less important than the relevance of the search results.
Based on my initial searches, I would have to give Microsoft a failing grade on this new search engine. I sampled a wide variety of search terms related to different products and industries. In many cases, Yahoo local results were in the top ten or top twenty results. You mean to tell me there aren’t relevant websites that should rank higher for those terms than a Yahoo local result?
I also found search for products and services of national scope, showed results for local websites not even based in my geography. According to Comscore Microsoft’s share of the search market was 8% in April of 2009. It is my prediction, unless they make some serious adjustments to their algorithm, their market share is destined to decline significantly more in the next few months. I’m sure Yahoo and Google are laughing all the way to the bank! Let us know your opinion!
