Google Ad Planner is a new tool to place ads on targeted website.

This post comes from Information Week. Google has launched online tools to help advertisers choose the best Web sites for reaching a target audience, a move that apparently sent the stock of Web metrics firm ComScore plummeting more than 22%. The Google Ad Planner enables advertisers to enter the demographics and sites associated with their target audience to get back information about sites, on and off the Google network, that the audience is likely to visit. The tool also lets advertisers drill down further to get more details, such as demographics and related searches for a particular site,...

What happened to Lowes customer service? A tale of a company in decline!

I stopped going to Home Depot many years ago because their customer services was so poor. I’ve been going to Lowes in recent years but I can no longer tolerate their indifference to creating a quality customer experience. I recently went to my local Lowes in Temecula, California to purchase some custom paint. It was in the early morning and there were only a few customers in the paint section. There wasn’t an employee anywhere. Regardless I decided to pick my color and attempt to purchase some paint. I found the base paint I wanted and needed someone to mix the paint for me. Unfortunately...

Making the Most of Your Content for Blended Search.

This article is written by my friend Terrie Wells from SEOChat. In the first part of this article, I talked about the ways in which Google’s Universal Search (and other search engines’ blended search) changes the equation for SEO. I tried to get you thinking about what you’re currently doing with your content, and the changes you can make. In this part, I’ll cover that subject in more detail, and talk about using social media to promote your site. Before I dive back into this subject, let me talk a little about the different kinds of content that can turn up in a blended...

Why did my search engine rankings at Google go down by Daryl Clark.

If you have ever had your web site near the top of the rankings for relevant search terms it can be a very heady experience. This is especially true if you are able to capture the #1 ranking for a search term related to your product or service. A frequent question I get is, why did my website’s ranking at Google go down? There are usually a variety of reasons not just one reason. First of all Google rankings seldom remain static, so you better get used to the changes. Google Page Rank isn’t the same as ranking in Google.

There is a lot of confusion about Google Page Rank and how it effects a website’s Google search engine rankings. Here is a good article by Mark Jackson and the folks at Search Engine Watch. It’s happened more than once. A prospect calls me to discuss the possibility of having my company handle their Google PageRank, let me share this Wikipedia definition with you: PageRank is a link analysis algorithm that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of “measuring” its relative importance within...

YouTube applies science to the art of viral marketing.

Yesterday I came across this great article from the L.A. Times Technology Blog. It probably comes as no surprise that YouTube would eventually provide this kind of information. This is essential to monetizing their advertising space. “Three days after Weezer posted its music video “Pork & Beans” on YouTube, 2.2 million people had watched it. And 65% of them were men. The heavily male demographic surprised the band’s marketing team, which three months ago wouldn’t have been able to find out about the gender, or much else, of the people clicking on one of Weezer’s...

Hong Kong websites found most likely to pose security risk.

This article is from the L.A. Times. Hong Kong might be a lovely place to visit in person, but computer users should think twice before stopping there online. Using its free SiteAdvisor service, which rates millions of sites green, yellow or red for safety, McAfee looked at the overall risk for Web surfing in the top-level domains assigned to countries and in such generic domains as .com, .net and .edu. Hong Kong sites zoomed...

Microsoft seeks for search gains.

This article comes from CNET News. Microsoft is determined to get a bigger presence in the search market, and it’s willing to get creative with its checkbook to meet that goal. The software giant says it has issued another proposal to Yahoo and is in talks for some type of transaction with the Internet search pioneer that would not involve the acquisition of all of its assets. “Microsoft is considering, and has raised with Yahoo, an alternative that would involve a transaction with Yahoo but not an acquisition of all of Yahoo,” Microsoft said in a statement. One source suggested...
